Kansas football continues to win big on the recruiting trail, as head coach Lance Leipold received a commitment from 4-star safety Damani Maxson.
After one of the most successful weeks in Kansas Jayhawks football recruiting history, the coaching staff is not done with reeling in top-notch recruits. Damani Maxson is the latest name to join KU’s 2024 class.
Maxson, a 6-foot, 180-pound safety attending Clear Lake in Houston, is the No. 424 player in the country according to the 247 Sports Composite. KU running backs coach Jonathan Wallace and defensive coordinator Brian Borland primarily recruited him to the university.
His hard-hitting ability and athleticism should make him a mainstay in the Kansas defensive backroom in the future. Maxson is a top-40 safety who can play in the box or deep zones.
Maxson’s commitment was announced via Twitter, where he paid homage to his late father, who he lost in 2021. In the video, he says: “Man, we made it. You know, we made it. You aren’t here with us anymore, so I’m living through you. Or, you’re living through me. I’m gonna make you proud in every way I can.”
Arizona State hosted him on an official visit back in May, but Maxson only needed a few days at KU to make his decision. He committed on his visit, which began June 15.
Georgia, LSU, Arkansas, Miami (FL), and others had also offered Maxson after his strong junior season. He will look to capitalize on it to raise his recruiting ranking.
Maxson joins Austin Alexander, Jalen Todd, and Aundre Gibson as KU’s defensive back commits, though Maxson is the first safety of the bunch. He is the second highest-ranked recruit in the class, with Alexander sitting just 11 spots ahead of him in the Composite rankings.
