Kansas football is hosting four-star outside linebacker Dakyus Brinkley on an official visit today, and he would be the highest-rated high school commit of the Lance Leipold era in Lawrence.

Dakyus Brinkley is a four-star outside linebacker from Katy, Texas, who could be a big-time get for the Kansas Jayhawks. He is taking his official visit to the university today, and he has no others scheduled yet. Brinkley is ranked as the No. 235 player in the country according to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings. His elite athleticism and tremendous skill set could make him one of the best pass rushers in the Big 12.

A Brinkley commitment would be a program changer for the Kansas coaching staff. Brinkley would be the highest-rated recruit to ever commit to the Jayhawks under Coach Leipold. Getting a prospect who is this highly touted would prove to the college football world that Lance Leipold has truly changed the culture and direction of Kansas football.

Brinkley has been recruited by schools such as Kansas State, Baylor, Houston, Texas A&M, and Texas. Those are programs that routinely out-recruit Kansas, so it would be a great sign for the future of the Jayhawks if they can reel him in this summer. It should be noteworthy that Brinkley has thought enough of KU to take his first official visit to Lawrence.

June is a big month for all of college football, as it is when incoming high school seniors begin to take their official visits. The Jayhawks currently hold five commitments in the 2024 class — Red Martel, Isaiah Marshall, Jonathan Kamara, Aundre Gibson, and Carson Bruhn — and if the Jayhawks were to add Brinkley, it would be a historic start to the most important recruiting month of the year.

Kansas football has been getting more highly-touted recruits on campus for visits in the 2024 cycle. That can be contributed to a few different reasons, like the stadium renovation plans, the 2023 Liberty Bowl appearance, and College Gameday being in Lawrence for the first time. These are all huge factors. Coach Leipold needs to be able to get in on these talented players so that he’s able to have sustained success moving forward.
