Kansas basketball continues to add impressive names to its roster for The Basketball Tournament — the latest being former defensive standout Marcus Garrett.

Kansas Jayhawks fans are grateful enough to see alumni perform at the professional level after they leave the university. In recent years, more nonchalant leagues have been assembled for retired or aging basketball players. The BIG3 is among the most popular, and The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is also growing in popularity.

Several former KU players have united to form a squad in TBT. Marcus Garrett is the most recent addition to “Mass Street,” the moniker that the alumni team is going under.

Garrett, a four-year player at Kansas between 2017 and 2021, was one of the best defensive players in the program’s illustrious history. He won the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award in 2020 and was arguably the best on-ball defender that Bill Self ever coached.

Across his collegiate career, Garrett averaged 7.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, making the All-Big 12 team twice. He played 12 games for the Miami Heat in 2021-22, though he has not played outside of the G-League since.

Garrett joins Thomas Robinson, Keith Langford, and Tyshawn Taylor as members of the Mass Street team. They will be coached by the Morris twins, Marcus and Markieff. Although they’d like to join the team, active NBA players cannot partake in TBT.

It’s another big-time addition to the alumni team, and Mass Street should be one of the top units in the tournament. Unlike the other three players, Garrett offers some youth — while he is 24 years old, the second-youngest player is “T-Rob,” who is 32 years old.

The first game will take place on July 19 in the first round of the Wichita Regional. Their opponent is still undetermined.
