Kansas baseball had its luck run out in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament, falling 14-4 to TCU — but the season is not over just yet.

The Kansas Jayhawks upset the No. 1-seeded Texas Longhorns on Wednesday in the Big 12 Tournament, but TCU dismantled them yesterday via the mercy rule.

Starting pitcher Hunter Cashero did not make it out of the first inning, surrendering hits to six of the ten batters he faced. Kansas’ relievers did not fare much better — they allowed an 11 run onslaught, including nine in the final three innings that led to the game being called in the eighth.

Luke Leto and Jake English hit home runs, though it was to no avail with KU’s poor pitching performance. Mike Koszewski and Janson Reeder also recorded multiple base knocks in the contest.

TCU third baseman Brayden Taylor, a projected first-round draft selection and MLB.com‘s No. 22 prospect for 2023, had his way with the Jayhawks. He hit his 20th dinger of the season, two doubles, and an additional single. Taylor also put on a defensive clinic, robbing Kansas of some baserunners.

The good thing for Kansas baseball is that they still have a consolation round to play, so head coach Dan Fitzgerald will able to ride it out with the KU seniors for one or two more games. Once a team loses their second game in the tourney, they are eliminated.

Kansas will play in-state rival K-State in the consolation game at 3:00 PM CT. The Wildcats also lost by double digits to TCU in the prior round. Whoever wins the contest will play against the Horned Frogs once more in a rematch. If Kansas cannot come out on top, their season will officially come to a close.
