Kansas basketball: Jayhawks partake in NBA Draft Combine scrimmages, drills
Three Kansas basketball players are participating in the NBA Draft Combine, and they are representing the university well.
On top of losing eight players to the transfer portal, the Kansas Jayhawks had their three leading scorers from 2022-23 enter the NBA Draft. They are all looking to make a name for themselves in the week-long event and have done a terrific job doing so.
In the NBA Draft Combine, players must complete drills, measurements, and pickup games. The first round of scrimmages ensued yesterday evening, in which Jalen Wilson and Kevin McCullar partook.
McCullar played in the first scrimmage. In 17 minutes off the bench, he sunk three of his five shot attempts for six points. He also grabbed five rebounds, recorded two steals, and blocked a shot.
Wilson participated in the second scrimmage. Unlike McCullar, he was in the starting lineup, but he did not perform nearly as well. He shot 1-8 in 19 minutes played and turned it over twice.
Dick is a higher-level prospect than his two former teammates, so he did not play in the scrimmages. He eventually will as the Combine progresses. On Tuesday, he did agility drills and shot three-pointers.
Wilson and Dick had their measurements taken on the first day of the event. Dick’s official height was 6-foot-6.25 inches (without shoes), while Wilson’s was 6-foot-5.5 inches. Dick weighed in at 204 pounds, and Wilson weighed in at 230.2 pounds. The measurements about what was expected from the two.
Kansas transfer portal targets Grant Nelson and Arthur Kaluma also played on the first day of scrimmages. Nelson scored six points, and Kaluma scored five. It is increasingly likely that Nelson keeps his name in the draft pool, which is unfortunate for Jayhawk fans.
There is no question that Dick and Wilson will keep their names in the draft, but Kevin McCullar is less of a sure thing. He has until May 31st to withdraw his name and retain his final year of college eligibility.
