In the final home series of the season, Kansas baseball (22-26, 7-14) took one of three games vs. the No. 27-ranked Texas Longhorns.

The Kansas Jayhawks have already surpassed last year’s win total in baseball, and they added one more to the column with a win over Texas on Friday. However, they dropped the next two games, making it the fourth consecutive series they have not come out on top of.

Kansas won the first game 10-4 and dropped the next two games by the scores of 2-6 and 6-7, respectively.

Freshman phenom Kodey Shojinaga recorded eight hits in 12 at-bats vs. Texas. He leads the team with an extraordinary .389 batting average and an exceptional strikeout rate of just 10.7 percent.

The rubber match of the series was Kansas’ Senior Night. Cole Elvis, Collin Baumgartner, Jake Baker, and Sam Ireland were honored for their contributions to the program.

A ninth-inning two-run rally was not enough for the Jayhawks, as they stranded two runners when they made the game’s final out. It was a disappointing home finale for the fans who attended.

After starting the season 8-0 at home, KU finishes the year just 10-8 at Hoglund Ballpark. Their next six games are on the road, and the Big 12 Tournament will commence after the conclusion of the regular season.

Although there have been growing pains for the team during Dan Fitzgerald’s first season as KU’s skipper, there have been steps in the right direction. Kansas has multiple impactful players who will strengthen next year’s team, assuming they do not transfer elsewhere.

The regular season will end after two consecutive three-game sets on the road. They begin a road trip to Samford beginning on May 11th and close out conference play in Lubbock vs. Texas Tech.
