Kansas basketball and Houston will reportedly meet sometime in 2024-25 for a game in Mexico City.
The Kansas Jayhawks are international. Chris Vannini of The Athletic (subscription required) reported that the Big 12 was nearing a deal to play conference games in Mexico City starting in 2024-25 — both in football and basketball.
These games would be played in Arena CDMX (Ciudad de México). It has hosted NBA regular season contests and UFC main events, yet it never expanded to collegiate games. It should bring in some much-needed revenue with the departure of Texas and Oklahoma from the conference.
Though nothing is set in stone, Kansas and Houston are the two schools that will reportedly meet in basketball. After spending a decade in the American Athletic Conference, UH figures to be one of the top rivals to KU. They made a Final Four in 2021 and racked up a No. 1 seed in this year’s bracket.
While some are opposed to the idea of the Jayhawks traveling south of the border, it will undoubtedly be a memorable experience for Bill Self’s squad. Kansas is also scheduled for an international trip during the upcoming summer.
Assuming it comes to fruition, it will be one of the most highly anticipated conference games the Big 12 has ever had.
