Kansas basketball made it to the top two in Primo Spears’ final transfer list, but he chose to attend Florida State instead.

With the commitment of Arterio Morris announced yesterday, the Kansas Jayhawks were likely out of the running for Primo Spears. His junior season of D-I ball will be with the FSU Seminoles.

Spears, a transfer from Georgetown, averaged 16.0 points and 5.3 assists in 32 games in 2022-23. Although the Hoyas finished the season 7-25, he showed plenty of promise, including in a 37-point outing vs. Xavier.

Because he already transferred from Duquesne as a freshman, he must obtain a waiver from the NCAA to play next season. Morris’ immediate eligibility was one of the many advantages that he had over Spears.

As soon as Morris committed to Kansas, it was apparent that they prioritized him over everyone in the guard position. Two crystal ball picks on 247 Sports were placed last night that chose Spears to attend FSU, and they were right on the money. He will make a tremendous impact for the Seminoles who recently lost Matthew Cleveland to the transfer portal.

Sources indicate that KU is looking to add a wing player and a big man. To do so, the Jayhawks must cut a scholarship player from their roster. Kansas’ self-imposed penalties at the start of the season reduced their scholarship number from 13 to 12 for the next three years.

Although Spears would have been a pleasant addition, his inefficiencies and the questions surrounding his eligibility made him a red flag. Kansas basketball is no longer recruiting guards with the crowded backcourt of Dajuan Harris, Elmarko Jackson, Kyle Cuffe Jr., and now Morris, among others. Fans should focus their attention on players like Mackenzie Mgbako or Jaylon Tyson at the wing position and pray that Hunter Dickinson decides to come to Lawrence.
