2020 – Marcus Garrett

Although he was just the fourth leading scorer on the team, Garrett meant more than any other player in the 2020 season. He led the team in assists and spearheaded another defensively sound Jayhawk team. In fact, he was one of the best defensive players in KU history, earning three Big 12 All-Defense selections and being named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. He didn’t stuff the stat sheet. He wasn’t the guy taking the final shot in a tie game. He wasn’t the prototypical “best” KU player. What he was, though, was a hardworking, nose to the grindstone, never give-up, coach’s best friend type of player.
