2001 – Drew Gooden
Collison would have had a great case to join Simien and Ellis in the two-time winner club if not for the absurd year that Gooden had. In Drew’s final season, he put up a monster 20 points and 11 rebounds per game. Like Collison, he was also named Big 12 Player of the Year and chosen as a first-team All-American. He led the team to the Final Four before losing to eventual champion Maryland. This exercise has shown me how much the lure of the NBA has taken away what could be so many great college careers. Guys like Gooden and Collison stuck it out and it paid off by being some of the best players in the history of one of the best college programs ever.
