One of the top sharpshooters in the history of Kansas basketball is having the best stretch of his NBA career.
Svi Mykhailiuk, a former Kansas guard and hero in the 2018 Elite Eight, is playing for his sixth professional team. After being traded to Charlotte at the deadline, he has been delivering Hornets fans with some astounding performances.
The 6-foot-8-inch Ukrainian native played 136 games for the Kansas Jayhawks. In those games, he averaged 8.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He sunk 115 threes at a 44.4% clip in his senior season. After playing at the university for four years, the Los Angeles Lakers drafted Svi with the 47th overall pick.
Following his departure from the Lakers during his rookie season, he has played for the Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Raptors, and New York Knicks, aside from his current team.
While he hasn’t found much job security in the past, it could be different for him in Charlotte. He has become a vital role player for the team, and the Hornets expect him to stick around for quite a while.
Mykhailiuk was firing on all cylinders last night against his former Raptors team, hitting five shots from beyond the three-point line. He totaled a career-high 26 points on 10-17 shooting, assisting five buckets and grabbing four rebounds. Svi has scored more than 13 points in four of his last five contests. Jayhawk fans will never forget how pure of a shooter he was, and it’s great to see that continue at the highest level of basketball.
Svi has found a groove as of late and will continue to make a case to sign a long-term contract over the final three games of the regular season. Even though the Hornets will not be playing postseason basketball, it is exciting to see a Kansas product yielding satisfactory results in the pros. Mykhailiuk may have found a secure home for the first time in his NBA career, and it will be interesting to see what kind of player he becomes during his time in Charlotte.
The Charlotte Hornets do not play today, but they are right back at it tomorrow when they host the Toronto Raptors at 6:00 PM CT. Tune in to see this Kansas alum score some points.
