The lady Jayhawks did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament, but they have been drubbing their competition in the WNIT.

After a disappointing loss in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament that ultimately eliminated them from March Madness contention, the Kansas women’s basketball team regained its focus in the women’s NIT. They have defeated their opponents by a combined 90 points in the five-game stretch that has taken them to the WNIT title game.

Kansas comfortably took down Washington in the Fab 4, winning by 25. Their staggering defense was the star of the show, holding the Huskies to just 36 points.

The Jayhawks have come out with a vengeance since they were ignored by the NCAA Tournament committee earlier this month. They have played each of their five WNIT games in Allen Fieldhouse thus far, and that will also be the case in today’s afternoon championship game vs. Columbia.

It will be the first time the women’s team made the WNIT title game since 2009 when they faced off against the University of South Florida. They did not come out victorious in this meeting, but KU will look to change that narrative tonight and win their first-ever WNIT championship.

Although there are still growing pains with the women’s basketball program, it will be a tremendous achievement if head coach Brandon Schneider can bring home a plaque to Lawrence. It could show incoming recruits the type of culture that Kansas is trying to obtain.

Tip-off is at 4:30 PM CT, and the first 500 students at the Fieldhouse can enter for free. Everyone should show appreciation to the lady Jayhawks and cheer them on in the championship game if they can attend. It should be a high-energy matchup for the final game of the seniors’ career.
