After an unsatisfactory sophomore year, point guard Bobby Pettiford has entered his name into the transfer portal.
It was too evident that some of the Jayhawks bench players from this season would transfer. With five-star recruit Elmarko Jackson coming in and Dajuan Harris staying for the foreseeable future, Bobby Pettiford is likely going to find a new home in college basketball.
It was one of the more blatant transfers for Kansas. Not only did Pettiford struggle to find playing time, but he did not perform well on the court when he did. He turned the ball over more than once a game in 12 minutes while giving Kansas no source of shooting or offense.
While he might be an effective player elsewhere, things never panned out with Pettiford at KU. A four-star recruit coming out of high school, some people thought he could be a serviceable contributor to Bill Self, who has a long history of developing four-star guards. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
Kansas would retain only eight of its scholarship players if next season were to start today. The off-season is a long process, but some things will need to be addressed with the team. They need to find a source of shooting with Gradey Dick gone, a source of rebounding and scoring with Jalen Wilson gone, and a source of defense with Kevin McCullar gone.
It creates an interesting plot for the Jayhawks moving forward. Joseph Yesufu might decide to stay for his senior season if he is okay with coming off the bench. However, even with Pettiford gone, the only guard that has a clear route to playing time is Harris. Bill Self must be active in the transfer portal, because this will not be the last player that departs from the program.
