Kansas basketball head coach Bill Self won’t be courtside for the Jayhawks’ Big 12 quarterfinal game against West Virginia. Norm Roberts to serve as head coach in KU’s Big 12 Tournament opener.
In a surprising news report, the Kansas Jayhawks released a statement that legendary coach Bill Self would not be around for this afternoon’s contest against West Virginia.
The press is referring to it as a “health issue.” No other details can be confirmed at this time.
It is a scary announcement on what was supposed to be an exciting day of basketball. All we can do is pray for him and his health.

Kansas football head coach Lance Leipold thinks Self is in good care.
#KUfball coach Lance Leipold on #KUbball coach Bill Self's health:
— Matt Tait (@mctait) March 9, 2023
“It sounds like he’s in good care and those things and I wish him the best. It’s unfortunate that it happens at this time for his team.”
Adds that he doesn't know enough to comment more out of respect to family
In his absence, Norm Roberts will serve as the interim coach until further news is released. Roberts went 4-0 earlier this season while Self was serving a suspension due to KU’s NCAA sanctions. Roberts is a veteran who coached St. John’s for six years, so the Jayhawks are in good hands with him.
As for other news before the game versus West Virginia, Defensive Player of the Year finalist Kevin McCullar is expected to miss today’s contest. Kansas will be missing a lot of key pieces today.
HEARING: I don’t expect Kevin McCullar to play today for KU vs. WVU. #KUbball
