Kansas basketball: Texas loss to TCU gives Kansas outright Big 12 title
Kansas basketball
A fellow Big 12 opponent did the Jayhawks a colossal favor last night.
Following KU’s victory versus Texas Tech on Tuesday, the Texas Longhorns played on the road in Fort Worth on Wednesday. They were unable to complete a second-half comeback against TCU and lost 75-73. This extended KU’s Big 12 lead to 2 total games over UT, subsequently ending their chances at sharing the Big 12 regular season title with Kansas.
Just a few weeks ago, it seemed like the regular season finale in Austin would have enormous implications for both teams. Texas led the entire conference by multiple games with a stellar 8-2 record in league play. But after dropping four of their past seven contests, the Longhorns have dug themselves too deep of a hole to get out of.
No matter how many players enter the NBA Draft and transfer from Kansas, Bill Self always finds a way to put together a top-notch team. There is no way to avoid its inevitability.
He even did it during a year when analysts said that Kansas would have a “championship hangover.”
Since the Big 12’s inception, Kansas has held sole ownership of the Big 12 regular season title 16 times. They have shared it with another school for five years. And during Self’s tenure, the Jayhawks have captured the title a miraculous 17 instances during his 20 seasons in Lawrence.
Even though KU possesses the regular season conference title, they still have an arduous task at hand when traveling south this Saturday.
Saturday’s meeting versus Texas will not make any difference in the Big 12, yet it would potentially be KU’s most impressive win yet this season. A road victory against a school with a top 10 NET ranking is something not most teams have. At the very least, TCU’s win allows Jayhawk fans to ease up when watching the game this weekend.
