For years it seemed as if the Kansas administration was unwilling to do whatever it took to make sure the football program could compete at the highest level.
From handicapping coaching salaries to failing to get stadium renovations off the ground, it’s never felt like Kansas football was a priority.
That is no longer the case.
On Tuesday night, it was announced that Kansas had reached an agreement with head coach Lance Leipold on a new contract that extends him through 2029.
The move signifies yet another sign that Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff and Chancellor Doug Girod are committed to improving the football program.
Under Leipold, Kansas is seeing real success for the first time since 2008.
In just year two, he has helped this program reach its first bowl game in 14 years. He’s helped the Jayhawks end a 13-year conference road losing streak. He’s guided them to victories at Texas and West Virginia for the first time in school history.
He’s done all of that and more.
But most importantly, he’s changed the culture of the program and reenergized a fanbase that has been longing for just some mild success like they’ve experienced this season.
Though the details of his new contract have yet to be released, he has demonstrated so far that he is worth every penny.
New stadium details released
The excitement surrounding Leipold’s extension comes on the heels of more news regarding the future of KU’s home stadium.
Just last week, more details were released on the proposed renovations to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium that were announced shortly before College GameDay came to Lawrence in early October.
The project will include a gateway to campus, a new events center, health care facilities, upgraded restrooms and concession stands, and much more.
Upgrades to Memorial Stadium are nothing new, as past athletic directors have attempted to do the same thing KU is doing now.
The difference this time around is that Goff is making sure the plans come to fruition.
He’s making sure they come to fruition because he recognizes the important role the stadium plays in recruiting, fan support, and conference realignment.
In order to achieve this, Goff will have needed support from the chancellor, donors, and alumni to ensure a project of this magnitude would be possible – all of which he has received.
From the administration to the fans, it’s clear there is a newfound excitement and commitment to excellence around Kansas football.
The signing of Lance Leipold strengthens that commitment and provides Kansas the opportunity to raise its standard in football for years to come.
