Heading into this past weekend, the Jayhawks had just one player committed in the 2023 class, causing some angst for many Kansas football fans. That concern was addressed in a big way after Lance Leipold and staff secured the commitments of three talented prospects.

The first commitment came from a coveted wide receiver recruit from the West Coast.

Surahz Buncom is a 6-foot-4, three-star prospect listed as the No. 52-rated player in the state of California, per Rivals.com. He chose KU over offers from BYU, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado, KSU, and others.

Since KU doesn’t currently have any senior wide receivers on the roster, Buncom should be able to come in and learn from the upperclassmen without feeling the pressure of producing right away as a freshman.

The second commitment came from unranked linebacker Tristian Fletcher. The 6-foot prospect currently plays for Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.

Fletcher chose KU over offers from Louisiana Tech and Sam Houston State.

The third and final commitment of the weekend came Sunday night from three-star wide receiver Jarred Sample out of Cypress, Texas.

The 6-foot Sample chose KU over Army, Houston, Memphis, and several others.

More to come?

The Jayhawks needed a boost in their 2023 recruiting efforts and accomplished that with the verbal commitments from these three prospects.

Don’t be surprised if the Jayhawks hear more good news in the near future from some of the other recent visitors. Prospects to keep an eye on include three-star offensive lineman Calvin Clements from Lawrence Free State High and three-star wide receiver Keaton Kubecka.

Following this successful recruiting weekend, the Jayhawks now have four players committed in 2023 – with room to grow.

The NCAA recently removed the annual 25-player limit on scholarships for high school and transfer prospects, meaning KU can sign as many as they see fit to reach the 85-scholarship threshold for the 2023-24 roster.

Players can officially sign beginning Dec. 21, 2022 during the early signing period.
