On Tuesday, the Kansas men’s golf team punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships after finishing fifth at the NCAA Bryan Regional in Bryan, Texas.

This marks the 13th time in school history the Jayhawks have qualified for the NCAA Championships and the first since 2018. It’s also their second appearance under head coach Jamie Bermel, who is in his 10th season leading the team.

The championships will take place at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, beginning May 27. The Jayhawks – currently ranked at No. 29 in the Golfstat National Team Rankings – are one of 30 teams to qualify for the event.

After the first three stroke-play rounds, 15 teams will advance. Following the fourth round, the top eight teams will advance to determine the national champion.

The Jayhawks have had a stellar season as the team has finished first (or tied for first) in five of their 13 tournaments this year.

Their success is due in large part to a trio of seniors: Ben Sigel, Harry Hillier, and Callum Bruce. That veteran leadership should bode well for the team’s chances in the championships.

According to team records, the highest the Jayhawks have ever finished in the NCAA Championships is tied for 11th back in 1950. With the talent and experience on this roster, this team has a chance to not only top that finish but bring home their first NCAA Championship in school history.

It would be a remarkable feat for Kansas Athletics to boast two national champions in back-to-back months, following the men’s basketball championship last month. Needless to say, it would be a huge selling point for the golf program, recruits, and the university as a whole.

No matter where the team finishes next week, this has been a great year for the Jayhawks. As Bill Self once said, all they can do now is “take great to special.”
