Kansas football needs competitive showing against Texas Tech
By Dillon Davis
Since Lance Leipold took over as head coach of the Kansas football program, he has preached how important improvement is day by day and week by week. He’s talked about getting better at the fundamentals and the little things that they can control.
Well, the Jayhawks just had two weeks to work on those fundamentals and figure out how to bounce back after an embarrassing loss to the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames. They need to show they got better during those two weeks when Texas Tech comes to town on Saturday.
The Red Raiders, who didn’t have a bye week last week, lost badly at home to TCU, 52-31. In Big 12 play, Texas Tech is surrendering an average of 47 points per game – a sign that Kansas should be able to score points and be competitive offensively.
But Kansas needs to show more than just a competitive offense – they need to have a competitive showing all the way around.
Kansas football needs to play to the level which they are capable
Even with the talent deficiency and roster issues this team has, there’s no excuse for getting blown out at home coming off a bye with two weeks to rest and prepare against an unranked team giving up more than 40 points per game in conference play. Not to mention it’s homecoming so there should be a nice crowd on hand.
The Jayhawks need to show signs of improvement, and this coaching staff needs to show they can make adjustments with the extra time given to them from the bye week.
If KU loses, no one will blame them for that. This team is a huge work in progress, they are the worst team in the Big 12, they’re a three-score underdog, and no one is (or should be) judging this year off of wins and losses.
However, if Texas Tech comes in and beats Kansas soundly, then that’s a bad look for both these players and coaches. And it will likely seal the deal on low attendance and viewership from fans for the rest of the season
Kansas will likely not have a more favorable setup for a win this season than they do on Saturday. At the very least, they need to make this a game and show they have made improvements from the previous weeks.
That’s all anyone is expecting in year one of this rebuild.
