Kansas Football: The 10 greatest Jayhawks of all-time
By Cade Stout
#8: Gilbert Brown, DT (1989-92)
Being a strong recruit from Detroit, it may be surprising that Gilbert Brown turned down an offer from Michigan and other big programs to play at Kansas.
Brown immediately made his mark in 1989, starting all but two games in his four-year career. He ranks ninth in school history with 30 career tackles for loss. In 1991, the Big 8 recognized him with Second-Team all-conference honors.
Brown went on to have a successful NFL career and was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 2008. He was added to the Ring of Honor in 2017 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of KU’s 1992 Aloha Bowl victory.
#7: David Jaynes, QB (1971-73)
Bonner Springs, Kansas native David Jaynes remains the only Heisman Trophy finalist in Kansas Football history, finishing fourth in the voting in 1973. Jaynes left KU as the record-holder in nearly all passing categories.
Jaynes threw for 5,350 yards and 36 touchdowns on 413 completions between 1971 and 1973. In 1973, he led the Big 8 in passing yards. He was First Team All-Big 8 and a consensus All-American. Jaynes is inducted into the Ring of Honor at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
