Kansas football: Jayhawks need to be ‘consistently good, not occasionally great’
The Kansas football offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki is going to be fun to quote this year. He has a lot of knowledge and uses his words well.
When speaking to the media Kotelnicki said he looks for a quarterback to be “consistently good, not occasionally great.”
This is good news because if the Jayhawks need anything it’s consistency.
This also sheds some light on which way the Jayhawks are leaning for a starting quarterback. It’s been reported that both Jason Bean and Jalon Daniels, while extremely talented, have had some consistency issues. The one quarterback who has shown consistency so far is Miles Kendrick.
Head Coach Lance Leipold even had this to say of Kendrick.
"“He really impressed me over the summer, just with his work ethic and how he goes about it. He can flush away a mistake. He can battle back. He has good leadership skills. I think he has very good confidence”"
Kansas football needs on-field leadership too
Going into fall camp Kansas fans were betting on Bean or Daniels to take the lead for the starting spot, but it’s looking more and more like Kendrick could be the guy.
Kotelnicki also said the Jayhawks won’t be focused so much on the time of possession. He’s more concerned with taking advantage of every possession–are they getting field goals or are they scoring touchdowns.
When the Jayhawks were in the red-zone last year they scored 77 percent of the time, which tied them for 97th in the FBS. They only had 18 total red-zone trips all year, scoring just seven touchdowns and four field goals.
But the overall feeling around this staff is they’re looking to get rid of the bad habits and get back to the basics of playing good football.
"“We’re not going to play bad football. Because bad football’s going to get you beat way faster than playing good football is going to win you games.” – OC Andy Kotelnicki"
This season shouldn’t be solely judged on wins or losses. The Jayhawks have a steep hill to climb before they start winning right away.
But the season can be judged on how much good football they play, which will include fewer mistakes and more progress.
And a lot more Kotelnicki quotes.
