What to watch for during 2021 Kansas football fall camp

A backfield edge

Led by returning running backs coach Jonathan Wallace, the Jayhawk backfield will be one of the more interesting areas of this team to watch.

Due to injuries, the Jayhawks shuffled multiple backs last year to find some sort of traction offensively. Following the departure of Pooka Williams Jr., some younger, promising rushers came forward and starting getting touches.

Sophomores Daniel Hishaw and Amauri Pesek-Hickson took to the role of running back last season and showed quite a bit of grit at times. Even if only a couple yards or so, these backs were tough and weren’t afraid to get physical.

Returning junior rusher Velton Gardner will also be expected to carry some of the weight, after missing considerable time in 2020 due to injuries.

Also joining the running backs department will be Lawrence High’s Devin Neal, who was one of the highest-ranked rushing recruits in the 2021 class. He’ll likely see some touches this season and will be a must-watch player during fall practices.
