Kansas football: Which quarterback will grab the starting job?
One of the bigger questions going into the Kansas football fall camp; who will start at quarterback?
In years past, this has been a common question. And in most of those years, the answer wasn’t known until the first snap.
I don’t see this year being any different as new Kansas head coach Lance Leipold didn’t arrive in Lawrence until after the spring game.
The top three candidates will likely be senior Miles Kendrick, sophomore Jalon Daniels, and junior North Texas transfer Jason Bean.
Kendrick has the most experience at Kansas of the three, as he’s played in a total of 11 games, racking up 84 completions of 139 attempts, 747 total passing yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Coach Leipold has expressed his thoughts on the veteran quarterback, speaking at Big 12 Media Days.
"“Miles Kendrick has had an outstanding summer in lifting and development. He’s an outstanding leader and leader by example.”Coach Leipold on Miles Kendrick (247Sports)"
Next in line would be Daniels, who started the season for Kansas last year. In that year he completed 76 out of 152 attempts, 718 yards passing, one touchdown, and four interceptions.
Leipold commented on Daniels at media days, “You can see his body maturing. He’s a guy that has a smile on his face and has energy each and every way.”
Finally, we have the junior transfer from North Texas, Jason Bean. Even though he doesn’t have any experience with Kansas football, he appears to be the one in the quarterback’s room with the most college football experience.
Last year with North Texas, Bean threw for 1131 yards off 79 completions, 14 touchdowns, and five interceptions in eight games.
Leipold spoke about Bean at media days as well, stating, “Jason Bean is new and he’s learning his teammates and what it’s about. He’s got length. He runs well.”
If you’re looking at the numbers, it appears Bean could be the favorite to take the starting spot on Week 1. But if you want someone who has experience with the program, Kendrick may be your guy.
Two “dark horse” candidates are true freshmen Ben Easters and Conrad Hawley. Both had impressive senior high school seasons. The pair are expected to make decent strides during their first season at Kansas.
It will be difficult for Leipold to decide on a starting QB before camp ends, but he did say in his introductory conference, continuity and consistency are key for progress within the Kansas football program.
This leads me to believe he will find a starting quarterback as quickly and efficiently as he can, to allow that continuity and consistency to take shape throughout fall camp.
