Kansas basketball forward Ochai Agbaji seems to be pushing the clock on the NBA Draft, and for good reason.

ESPN’s latest mock draft projection lands the Jayhawk at 59th overall pick in the second round to the Brooklyn Nets. A similar projection slotted Agbaji in the 60th seat going to the Indiana Pacers. It seems that Ochai may have a safe bet in going late in the second round, however, he’s just a few spots from getting bumped.

The 2021 NBA Draft is scheduled for July 29, although the date to withdraw and retain college eligibility is July 7.

In Agbaji’s case, Brooklyn wouldn’t be a bad gig. The Nets recently finished their postseason run in the Eastern Conference semifinal against Milwaukee. Joining a roster that includes both Kevin Durant and James Harden would give him extremely talented mentors to work with.

Recent graduate and former teammate Marcus Garrett wasn’t found on ESPN’s projection, however, he’s been regarded as another late second-round find, according to The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie.

Whether or not we’ll see either Jayhawk taken in the second round remains up for debate, but one truth is certain: it’ll be a late pick.

With the draft lottery complete, we now have somewhat of a cemented order to gauge from, however, changes are almost inevitable. Both the New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets hold neighboring picks with similar position interest, in the event, Agbaji piques their interest as the draft approaches.

It does seem that Agbaji will pursue the draft right up until the deadline, and who could blame him for playing his cards close? However, there’s still a chance he’ll return, which gives us a lot more to talk about. Another year in Lawrence would help Agbaji continue to improve his draft stock and could give him a significant boost in the 2022 NBA Draft.
