Despite starting in seven of Kansas football’s nine games last season, fans weren’t treated to freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels‘ full potential.

Throwing for over 700 passing yards in his freshman season, Daniels found his start early in a 47-14 loss on the road against Baylor.

The fast-paced style Jalon brings to the offense was exciting at times, despite being alienated by a weak offensive line. This limited the amount of action we saw from his first year, including some injury hiccups along the way.

Newly hired head coach Lance Leipold will welcome some considerable quarterback options ahead of the upcoming season. However, Daniels has been making progress this spring and will be making a strong effort for the starting job as summer begins.

Considering how much competition is brewing up quarterback-wise, it’s hard to tell whether or not Daniels is a final candidate for the starting job.

Jalon showed some flashes during his freshman season, which debuted his strong arm. However, he failed to find a touchdown pass until his seventh appearance against TCU.

Daniels can put the ball up-field and his accuracy will only improve with time, which could see a noticeable change in 2021.

His age makes him a valuable asset, as Kansas can build on and develop a consistent quarterback in Jalon. This program hasn’t had much to show for long-term quarterbacks in the past decade, it would be fun to see that trend go away.

Heading into the summer, the quarterbacks’ department will have a lot on its plate.

UNT quarterback transfer Jason Bean is expected to arrive soon and join the debate. Along with Bean, senior Miles Kendrick and incoming freshmen Ben Easters and Conrad Hawley will heat the quarterback discussion.

It will be up to Daniels’ to continue growing and competing for the starting job. It’s going to be a much different season for Kansas in 2021, but that doesn’t mean he can learn a thing or two from the previous one.
