The first big task for KU’s new Athletic Director Travis Goff is to name the next head coach for Kansas football’s upcoming season.

One name rumored to be interested in the job is Army West Point Head Coach Jeff Monken.

In 2014, Monken inherited an Army program that had only been to one bowl since 1997. By 2016, Monken’s team won the Heart of Dallas Bowl finishing 8-5, and Army has now been to bowls in four of the last five seasons.

KU needs a massive culture change to rebuild, and Monken would bring a physical, disciplined, winning mentality.

Monken’s run-heavy, defensive-minded style can win in the Big 12. Think back to 2018 when Army took playoff-bound Oklahoma to overtime in Norman.

Army had a good team, but Jeff Monken’s style kept that game close by controlling the clock, keeping OU’s offense off the field, and challenging the front seven with the run.

It’s unrealistic to expect Kansas to rival other explosive Big 12 offenses, but possessing the ball, using the running game, and being physical on defense can keep games competitive.

The Jayhawks’ best teams historically have boasted strong defenses. In 2007, the most successful team in school history finished 4th nationally in overall defense.

Kansas’ priorities should focus on improving the offensive line and defense, particularly the front seven. Jeff Monken’s style and strengths would address these needs.

Expect Monken to change his offensive scheme if he were to come to Lawrence. He’d likely bring a run-first approach, but depart from the triple-option.

If he can strengthen the offensive line, then his scheme would suit the Jayhawks’ needs perfectly. A strong line would favor Kansas, who’s had good backfields in recent years.

Jeff Monken offers winning experience, physicality, and discipline to the Kansas program. If KU’s leadership is interested, they should pursue him this offseason before other power five programs begin extending offers.
