Kansas football and head coach Les Miles have found their new Offensive Coordinator, Mike DeBord, who brings experience and talent to the coaching role.

After a brief wait following the vacancy of the Offensive Coordinator role, Kansas football has hired Mike DeBord to run the Jayhawk’s offense. The decision was released in a statement from Kansas Athletics this afternoon.

The hire comes after a quick search following former OC Brent Dearmon’s departure. Head coach Les Miles had been expected to make a fast, yet educated decision to run this offense. With DeBord, Kansas will be adding a lengthy amount of experience to their coaching staff.

Mike will be re-uniting with head coach Les Miles, after the duo had previously coached together in the 1990s at Michigan.

Kansas struggled to produce a presentable offensive product in their recent winless season. Following the announcement, Debord expressed his thoughts on rebuilding the program.

"“I am excited to be the offensive coordinator at the University of Kansas,” DeBord said. “I’m really looking forward to reuniting with Les Miles, and joining his mission of building Jayhawk Football into a championship program.– Mike DeBord on his new role with Kansas football via press release."

DeBord, nearly 65 years old, and has seen a good deal of football. He holds over thirty years of college football experience with schools such as Michigan, Indiana, and Tennessee. Mike also found himself in San Diego working in the Alliance of American Football before the league’s bankruptcy.

For Jayhawk fans, it was important to score some knowledgeable experience and with DeBord, there is a lot of potential from his hire. Getting guys to fundamentally produce on offense is a must for next season and under Debord, we may see just that.

The good thing to see from Coach Miles’ decision is that he found someone that understands what this program going through. Nothing comes easy when building from the ground up, and Kansas is no exception.

With a “more normal” 2021 schedule, Kansas’ offense may find more success this off-season and get back to the drawing board. DeBord’s transition to spring ball will be interesting to watch, along with his new relationship with the coaching staff.
