Following a disappointing winless season, Kansas football is focusing its attention on the offensive line with the hire of Lee Grimes, seeking to steer the line situation into a better direction.

Kansas football had quite a few shortcomings in their 2020 campaign and without a doubt, the offensive line ‘ruffled some feathers’ for fans. Head coach Les Miles has brought on experienced coach Lee Grimes to command the Jayhawks’ offensive line in 2021. The hire arrived in an announcement by Kansas Athletics this morning.

In the bottom half of the 2020 schedule, the Jayhawks parted ways with Luke Meadows, the previous man behind the offensive line job in Lawrence. Under Meadows, Kansas struggled to protect the pocket and often had the Jayhawks rarely moving the chains during the year.

Following the interim assignment of John Morookian, it was obvious head coach Les Miles was going to look in a new direction coaching wise. His hire of Lee Grimes presents some new opportunities and some promise for the Kansas offense.

Grimes has quite a bit of experience with college football and even some brief time playing the NFL. He has spent the past season at UNC Charlotte, as well as some time on the staff at his alma mater, Texas A&M.

Coach Miles has expressed a lot of interest and belief in Grimes, stating that he brings a lot of “passion and energy to the offensive line position room”. A little spark on the line could be what Kansas needs to help put more power into defending both the pocket and the run.

The hire ushers in a new era for the offense and will likely put more responsibility on Grimes for next season. Following A.D. Jeff Long’s recent comment about expecting “improvement” in 2021, I’m sure Miles considered improving his offensive product when making the move on his coaching staff.

Nevertheless, any positive change for this offensive line is probably going to be well received and if this turns into a good hire, I’m sure Kansas fans would be excited to see more from their offense next season.
