David McCormack had a solid night on the floor last night, helping secure Kansas basketball a win over visiting Washburn.

Hosting Topeka neighbor Washburn, Kansas basketball found another win on the schedule this season. The win featured some much-needed action from junior forward David McCormack, who found some early slams against the Ichabods.

McCormack led the Jayhawks on offense with 17 points, as well as 6 rebounds. I think a lot of us expected McCormack to see more success vs. Washburn, as it gave him more opportunities to step up be a playmaker.

Seeing more action from the forward position is going to do wonders for Kansas. Having more strength down low is going to be very important as the season progresses. With the support of Mitch Lightfoot, we should see a stronger presence in the paint for the Jayhawks.

Lightfoot had a couple of nice buckets as well, which is another good sign of some of our weapons getting more comfortable down low.

The uneasy feelings regarding McCormack stem from the rather dormant start we’ve seen from him since the season began. After a couple of games, he has started to become more productive at moving the ball and is more dominant at the basket.

This was good to see from David, as he had come off to a slow start in the 2021 season. The win should help put some more confidence in McCormack, who is likely to remain a key contributor for this offense the remainder of the season.

Kansas is continuing to figure out what their starting five will look like off the bench, and the skeptical thinking regarding McCormack will probably continue as we head into Big 12 play. I think McCormack plays a big role in this offense, and being an upperclassman plays a factor.

We’ve seen some new changes in the starting five, such as the addition of Jalen Wilson, and this could change some of the dynamics we’re seeing from the Jayhawks. Let’s hope McCormack has some more in store for us, as an interesting test for Kansas is approaching on December 8th when Creighton comes to Allen Fieldhouse.
