Kansas football will face off against in-state rival Kansas State later this morning in the annual Sunflower Showdown. While the Jayhawks do hold the overall series advantage 64-47-5, the Wildcats have won the last 11 meetings between the teams. The way things are looking, that number will probably increase to 12.

Kansas is 0-4 last season, and while they did look somewhat better last week against West Virginia, the Jayhawks are still brutal on the offensive side of the ball. On the other hand, Kansas State is off to a 3-1 start and they also received a No. 20 ranking in the latest AP Poll.

For the Jayhawk defense, stopping running back Deuce Vaughn will be the key to the game. Vaughn currently leads the Wildcats in rushing yards (238), receiving yards (279), and touchdowns (4). He’s the key to their whole offense, now more than ever given the fact that starting QB Skylar Thompson is out for the rest of the season.

On offense, the Jayhawks must find a way to sustain drives. The rumor on the street is that true freshman Jalon Daniels will get the start this week and play the majority of the game. Head coach Les Miles has hinted that multiple QBs could see action though, so don’t be surprised if Thomas MacVittie and Miles Kendrick get snaps as well.

The Sunflower Showdown is going to be tough for the Jayhawks to win this season. Kansas has yet to prove themselves in any way, and until that changes, expectations for this team are going to be extremely low.
