Silvio De Sousa is parting ways with the Kansas basketball program, which opens up the opportunity for some young talent.

A brief message of departure is the result of Silvio De Sousa‘s time with Kansas basketball, and while we aren’t sure what his plans are for the future, there are plenty of eyes on who may be fulfilling his role this year.

The Jayhawks have a solid roster built this year, and aside from the veteran guys, we have a good amount of young developing players coming into 2020. With redshirt talent being produced like Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris, Kansas has a solid future up top. However, in regards to making the right moves in the paint, Kansas now has a hole down low with De Sousa’s departure. This means more minutes for younger talent out to prove themselves.

True freshman Gethro Muscadin should see some time this year in the paint. From his highlights, he is very aggressive at the basket. With the right amount of time to develop he will definitely become much stronger, making him dangerous when he gets close to the basket. Muscadin has shown quite a bit of consistency with quick jumpers, which he should definitely work on to help give himself an edge in tight situations.

Another option to fulfill the vacancy down low would be sophomore Tristan Enaruna, who has seen time at both guard and forward with the Jayhawks. He averaged around 10 minutes per game in his freshman season, seeing his share of Big 12 action. He is quick defensively and was a consistent rebounder for Kansas last season.

While these are two promising candidates to pick up the open minutes, it would be my guess that head coach Bill Self will probably be having senior Mitch Lightfoot pick up the slack for the Jayhawks. Lightfoot elected to redshirt his 2019-20 campaign and worked to respectively finish his undergrad degree. Hopefully, with good health, Lightfoot will see solid action this year for Kansas and mitigate our situation in the paint.

Whomever Kansas basketball picks to fill the minutes, it’s safe to assume that this first couple of games will be used to filter out what works and what doesn’t for us down low. We will also have some good opportunities at the Champion’s Classic to showcase some of our younger talent. Nonetheless, the loss of Silvio De Sousa will have us looking at some new talent as the 2020 season closes in.
