Kansas football: Miles Kendrick getting the start against West Virginia
Kansas football has confirmed that quarterback Miles Kendrick will be getting the start for the Jayhawks against West Virginia.
After an injury to Kansas football quarterback Jalon Daniels last week, Miles Kendrick stepped in to fill the role for the rest of the game. Following offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon’s comments yesterday, it sounds like Kendrick will be starting for the Jayhawks this Saturday on the road against West Virginia due to Daniels’ absence.
When Kendrick took over for Daniels, he ended up completing 11 out of 19 passes for 90 yards and an interception. It wasn’t his best outing, but things could be different this Saturday against the Mountaineers.
This is the first time this season that the coaching staff has actually named a starter instead of keeping it a secret until game time. That has to instill at least some confidence in Kendrick, who’s in his junior season with the Jayhawks. It’s also worth noting that senior quarterback Thomas MacVittie is also an option this week, so the staff seems to be 100 percent behind Kendrick with Daniels out.
Despite low expectations this season, West Virginia has looked pretty good out of the gate. They’re 2-1 overall with wins over Eastern Kentucky and Baylor, and a loss to Oklahoma State. Their overtime win over Baylor last week was a strong showing, so the Jayhawks will need to be sharp if they’re going to compete with the Mountaineers.
The good news is that the Jayhawks are coming off a bye week, so they’ve had plenty of time to prepare. The bad news is that head coach Les Miles tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday, yet he still plans to travel to Morgantown this weekend.
It’s probably tough for the Kendrick and the Jayhawks to practice this week without the leadership of Miles, but ultimately Miles’ health is much more important than a football game or two.
Maybe starting Kendrick will jumpstart the Kansas offense, maybe it won’t really matter. It is nice to know the starter in advance though, and that’s something the staff should release on a regular basis.
