Kansas football head coach Les Miles has tested positive for COVID-19. As he begins isolation, Miles’ case could change college sports this season.

Kansas football head coach Les Miles is the second coach of a Power Five program head coach to test positive for COVID-19 this week, with Arizona head coach Kevin Sumlin testing positive on Tuesday. News broke on Twitter today about Miles’ positive test, and athletic director Jeff Long was quick to respond, along with Miles.

Based on their statements, it sounds like Miles will maintain his role as the head coach of the Jayhawks by communicating remotely with his staff and players. As of now, Miles doesn’t have symptoms or a fever and it seems that they’re optimistic about Miles returning to the sidelines soon.

Long stated that Miles should be back for Kansas’ next game at West Virginia on October 17. If there’s any silver lining, no other coaches on the Kansas staff have tested positive, so that’s good especially in the event that Miles can’t return that soon.

Considering he’s 66 years old, Les Miles’ health is much more important than coaching the Jayhawks this season. The issue of positive cases among coaches is bigger than Miles though. If more coaches catch the virus, this 2020 college football season could end up going down the drain, or at least become riddled with no-contests.

Baylor has paused all football-related activities due to the virus this week, and there will likely be more instances of players, coaches, and entire teams having to isolate due to COVID-19. The problem with coaches catching the virus is that they’re much more difficult to replace than players, especially if they’re a coordinator or head coach.

We’re all wishing Les Miles a speedy recovery from COVID-19. With any luck, he’ll be back on the sidelines in no time, but there’s no doubt that his positive result could impact all of college athletics this season. It’s important for Miles to return the team ASAP, but only after he’s 100 percent ready to go.
