Kansas football just lost their highest-rated recruit in the 2021 class Keon Coleman, which is a massive setback for the Jayhawks.
Recruiting has always been tough for Kansas football. That’s just how it goes when you lose games hand over fist, but today the Jayhawks lost a major piece of their 2021 recruiting class when wide receiver Keon Coleman decided to decommit.
Coleman is a four-star recruit ranked in the top 300 prospects of the 2021 class. He was one of the highest-rated prospects Kansas had ever landed, but he will not be a Jayhawk after all. Coleman announced his decommitment earlier this evening on his Twitter, stating that he “rushed” into his decision.
Without Coleman, Kansas’ 2021 recruiting class tumbled to No. 49 in the nation and dropped to No. 7 in the Big 12 after being at No. 5 according to 247Sports. While it’s important to respect Coleman’s decision, it’s hard not to be upset as a Kansas fan.
This is purely speculation, but one has to wonder if the atrocious 0-4 start to this season for the Jayhawks played a major role in Coleman’s choice to decommit. It’s also important to note that Coleman has a number of other offers from prestigious programs including Auburn, Georgia, Penn State, Michigan State, Miami, Louisville, and many others. Coleman also regularly tweeted recruitment material from these other schools, so one must also wonder if Coleman was really 100 percent sold on Kansas.
At the end of the day, Coleman is doing what’s best for him and there could be factors that the public is unaware of. While losing him is a big loss for Les Miles and Kansas football, the Jayhawks still have a chance to pull in a solid 2021 class and continue to build for the future. It’s going to be a lot tougher now though, so we’ll see just what Miles and his staff are made of.
