Kansas football plans to host fans in David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium for the Jayhawks’ next home game against Oklahoma State.

Memorial Stadium can expect fans for the first time this season for next Saturday. This afternoon, Athletic Director Jeff Long confirmed today that the university will plan to admit 10,000 fans on October 3rd when Kansas football hosts Oklahoma State.

The news had broke via Twitter yesterday, by 247 Sports beat writer and Kansas’ own Scott Chasen:

There is sure to be a great deal of excitement for students. It’s time that the student body comes together, even with the social distancing protocols. All of which: masks, sanitation, social distancing, and proper systems of fan traffic will be enforced.

In the past, Memorial Stadium has not seen the best of attendance numbers. At least in this environment, there will be a crowd of some kind. The Marching Jayhawks and Kansas spirit squad are expected to be involved in the event as well.

Kansas Athletics plans to make the game safe as possible for in-person attendance. Looking at this from the perspective of progress, I think this is a step in the right direction for the university. However, Chancellor Girod has made it clear that the university will continue to monitor it’s decision heading into winter.

The announcement applies to volleyball and soccer patrons as well, helping expand the options for both fans and students to engage with the modified season for the fall semester. The university will allow up to 250 fans at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, and 400 fans at Rock Chalk Park starting in October.

If fans and students can adhere to the requirements and conditions set in place, we should be able to control both the virus and our ability to attend Kansas Athletics events in person. The expectations and changes have been made available here, in an official release by Athletic Director Jeff Long.
