Kansas football fell to Baylor tonight in a 47-14 loss. Freshman Jalon Daniels also got his first start of the season and played nearly the entire game.

Kansas football got off to a great start earlier tonight when they took on Baylor in Waco. The Jayhawks marched down the field and scored on their opening drive, with Pooka Williams scoring on a 21-yard rush. Kansas wouldn’t find the endzone again in the first half, going into the locker room down 17-7.

The Jayhawks got boat raced in the second half, being outscored 30-7 for a final score of 47-14. Williams also scored Kansas football’s other touchdown, totaling 76 yards and two TDs on 14 carries. The story of the night though isn’t Williams and his lack of attempts though, it’s true freshman Jalon Daniels who got the start at quarterback over Thomas MacVittie and Miles Kendrick.

Daniels went 19 for 33 on the night for 159 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Daniels is also credited with 14 rushes for 23 rushing yards on the night. While Daniels’ stat line doesn’t exactly jump off of the page, the young QB did show some promise. He’ll need time to develop for sure, but he could end up being the quarterback of the future for the Jayhawks.

Obviously, the Kansas defense struggled to contain the Bears’ offense, allowing them to gain over 350 yards on the day. Not everything was the defense’s fault though.

The Jayhawks gave up two touchdowns on special teams, and the bottom line is that Kansas is not good enough to be giving up big plays on special teams. One of the touchdowns came on the kickoff to begin the second half, which was even worse considering the effect it seemed to have on the Jayhawks for the duration of the half.

After being defeated by Coastal Carolina in the season opener and then getting blown out on the road by Baylor, things aren’t looking great for the Kansas Jayhawks. They’ll have to face a very solid Oklahoma State team at home next week, and it’ll take a massive improvement for the Jayhawks to stay competitive in that one.
