Kansas football didn’t have too many positive moments in their season opener loss to Coastal Carolina, but Jayhawks like Kwamie Lassiter II stood out.

There’s no denying that Kansas football’s opening game against Coastal Carolina was tough to watch. The Jayhawks fell 23-38 at home to the Chanticleers, but there were some positive takeaways including Kwamie Lassiter II‘s performance in the absence of Stephon Robinson.

In previous seasons Lassiter has played more of a background role, returning punts and playing behind other receivers. Last season he had 34 receptions for 354 yards, as well as one touchdown.

This season, the Jayhawks have one of the best receiving trios in the Big 12 made up of seniors Andrew Parchment, Robinson, and Lassiter. Robinson did not play against Coastal Carolina, and despite having the least amount of yards and touchdowns out of these three last season, Lassiter stepped up.

He led Kansas in receiving yards against the Chanticleers, totaling five receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. Parchment had a nice game too, logging six receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Getting Robinson back for next Saturday’s game against Baylor will be huge, but Lassiter certainly proved that he’s capable and ready to step up when the Jayhawks need him.

Considering the fact that the Kansas quarterback situation still seems to be up in the air, it’s a good thing that the Jayhawks have three capable receivers. The trio should help Kansas hedge against poor QB play, granted neither quarterback looked too bad against the Coastal Carolina.

Kwamie Lassiter II, while usually not the star of the show, is a solid contributor for the Jayhawks. Look for his role to increase this season, and look for his stats to take a dramatic leap between last season and this season.
