Kansas football has a bye week but their next opponent, the Baylor Bears, will take on Houston this Saturday. Here are three things to watch.

Kansas football did not look great last Saturday when they were defeated 38-23 by Coastal Carolina. Things will not get any easier when the Jayhawks face Baylor on the road September 26, but at least Kansas will have a bye-week to prepare for the Bears.

Baylor will take on Houston in Waco this Saturday, and it’ll be the Bears’ first game of the 2020 season. It should give Miles and his staff some valuable film considering Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is in his first season due to the departure of Matt Rhule.

For Kansas football fans, here are a few things to watch as Baylor begins their season:

Will Houston (or Kansas) contain Charlie Brewer?

It’s no secret that quarterback Charlie Brewer is one of the best in the Big 12 and the most important member of that Baylor offense. Aranda even went so far as to call him “a foundation piece.” He threw for over 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, so Houston and Kansas will have to do whatever they can to make him uncomfortable in the pocket.

The Jayhawks should be able to learn a thing or two from how the Houston defense does against Brewer, whether they actually contain him or get torched.

The Baylor defense is virtually brand new

The Bears had one of the best defenses in the Big 12 last season; however, they will only be returning two starters on that side of the ball. It’ll be interesting to see how the Cougars do against the new starters, especially considering Aranda is a defense-minded coach.

If the defense looks and plays like they had to replace 10 starters against Houston, the Jayhawks should at least be able to put some points on the board against the Bears.

How much will Baylor have regressed from last season?

After going 11-3 last season with Rhule leading the team, there are a lot of questions about just how good the Bears will be this season. Between a new head coach and massive turnover on defense coupled with the returning Brewer, it’s hard to figure out just how good Baylor will be.

Maybe the Bears will be a winnable Big 12 game for the Jayhawks despite it being on the road, or maybe Aranda will have Baylor looking really good despite the challenges. Kansas football fans, coaches, and players will certainly be watching Baylor this Saturday to find out for sure.

This game between Baylor and Houston will actually be the first time the two have met since the Southwest Conference days. It’s scheduled for this Saturday at 11:00 am on FOX.
