After Kansas football’s season opener loss to Coastal Carolina, no game this week should give the Jayhawks some much-needed time to improve.

It’s no secret that the Kansas Jayhawks did not look good last Saturday against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Kansas was behind 28-3 by halftime and ended up falling 38-23 once the clock ran out. Now, Kansas football will need to take advantage of this week off to prepare for their next opponent: the Baylor Bears.

Not only will this be Kansas’ first road test of the 2020 season, but Baylor is also one of the best teams in the nation. They just missed being included in the most recent AP Top 25, receiving the most votes of teams outside of the top 25. While Baylor did lose head coach Matt Rhule, the still have quarterback Charlie Brewer, who was a big part of their success last season.

The Bears will face a respectable Houston team this Saturday at 11:00 am in Waco, and it’ll be the Bears’ first game of the season. Considering the Jayhawks have the week off, they should do everything they can to fix their mistakes from the Coastal Carolina game.

Ball security and limiting turnovers have to be points of emphasis, and Les Miles and co. need to do whatever they can to strengthen their offensive line. Quarterbacks Thomas MacVittie and Miles Kendrick were both hurried or forced out of the pocket on multiple attempts, and the run-game struggled to get going.

Speaking of the run game, starting RB Pooka Williams sustained an injury in the Jayhawks’ game. There’s really no news as of now about Williams’ status, so the bye-week timing was really good in that regard.

Kansas and Baylor are set to kick off on Saturday, September 26 at 6:30 pm on ESPNU. If the Jayhawks are going to have a prayer, they’ll need to make some drastic improvements. If they come out and play like they did against Coastal Carolina, the game could get ugly in a hurry.
