Kansas football suffered a tough loss in their season opener last night to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, but the Jayhawks QB play wasn’t bad.

A lot of things went wrong in Kansas football’s loss to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers earlier this morning. The Jayhawks struggled in the trenches, they struggled with turnovers, and it was overall just an ugly game. One area where Kansas actually looked decent, at least relative to expectations, was at the QB position.

Head coach Les Miles said the Kansas Jayhawks would be going with a two-QB system between senior Thomas MacVittie and junior Miles Kendrick, the former of who got the start.

MacVittie, a JUCO transfer who joined the program last season, went five-for-nine on the night with no touchdowns and an interception; however, the interception was not his fault. It hit the receiver in the hands, and the ball was tipped up in the air and caught by the defense.

Considering MacVittie is thought of as a traditional pocket passer, he also showed some good mobility, picking up 37 rushing yards on the night.

Junior Miles Kendrick also did a lot of things right, going 15 for 24 on the night for over 150 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Kendrick threaded the needle on more than one occasion, but his interception was not as forgivable as MacVittie’s.

With neither QB being bad, there’s a question now of who should get the start, or at least the majority of snaps in Kansas’ next game against Baylor. Keep in mind that the Jayhawks’ next game won’t be until the 26th, so they’ll have a week off to make the decision.

All things being equal, the staff should probably go with Kendrick given the fact that they’ll get another year out of him. Even if MacVittie is only marginally better, it’d be best for the Jayhawks to give Kendrick the start so he can get some experience under his belt and improve.
