Kansas football started its 2020 season off with an ugly loss at home to Coastal Carolina, and the Jayhawks have some work to do.

Kansas football’s season opener against Coastal Carolina ended in utter disappointment earlier this morning. Sure, there were some questionable calls, but the Jayhawks did not do what they needed to do to pick up the win.

Interestingly, Kansas had more total yards and first downs than Coastal Carolina, but one thing killed the Jayhawks: turnovers. Kansas had three in the first half and went into the locker room down 28-3. Kansas was able to make the game interesting in the second half, but they weren’t able to overcome the turnovers and fell 23-38 to the Chanticleers.

The defense struggled to stop the Chanticleers too, but that was to be somewhat expected given the amount of turnover between last season’s squad and the 2020 team. At the end of the day, the offense can’t commit those turnovers, and the defense has to be able to get stops.

Despite the ugly, loss, there were positives from the game. Freshman kicker Jacob Borcila was one for two on the night, and he did make a 47-yarder. The one miss was a 52-yard attempt that was on target, but just short.

The Kansas Jayhawks also didn’t totally give up, putting up some fight and points in the second half. The Jayhawks scored 20 points with no turnovers, and one has to wonder what may have happened if Kansas had started the way they finished.

Kansas will have a week off before they take on the Baylor Bears in Waco on September 26. Hopefully, they’ll put some work in and get all of the kinks ironed out. The Bears are obviously going to be a much tougher opponent than Coastal Carolina, and it could get ugly quick if the Jayhawks play like they did today.
