Given Kansas football’s embarrassing loss against Coastal Carolina last season, the Jayhawks should have all the motivation in the world to defeat the Chanticleers.

Despite being a Power Five conference team, Kansas football isn’t exactly a huge favorite this Saturday against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers of the Sun Belt Conference. The Jayhawks are just a four-point favorite at home in the season opener according to The Action Network, but that sounds about right after what happened in 2019.

Last year, the Chanticleers defeated Kansas in Lawrence in an ugly 12-7 loss. After the game, Coastal Carolina proceeded to whack a Jayhawk piñata that they’d hung up in their locker room:

It was a low point in the season, but the Jayhawks came back in the following week and defeated Boston College on the road in a 48-24 victory. It was probably one of the biggest wins in the past few seasons for Kansas.

Still, that loss last season should give the Jayhawks all the motivation they’ll need to take on the Chanticleers at home this season. You can’t get much better bulletin board material than the video of Coastal Carolina’s postgame celebration. Add that to the tight spread and the fact that this season could be canceled at any time and the Jayhawks should come out with a ton of intensity despite the odd situation.

There won’t be any fans allowed at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, and the game is also going to be a late one. Kick-off isn’t until 9:00 pm CDT, so good luck with that if you’re on the East coast.

Despite all the uncertainty, this season provides a lot of opportunity for Les Miles and this 2020 Kansas Jayhawks team. It all starts this Saturday against Coastal Carolina though, and it’s imperative that Kansas football starts off with a 1-0 record.
