Former Kansas basketball star Jacque Vaughn spent six months as the interim head coach for the Brooklyn Nets; however, he will not be the team’s next head coach.

NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski dropped some big news this morning regarding the Brooklyn Nets and their interim head coach since March, Jacque Vaughn. Vaughn, a former Kansas basketball star has led the Nets in their during their playoff run in the bubble, guiding the team to the No. 7 overall seed in the East.

Despite some success though, Vaughn will not be retained as the head coach of the team. Instead, the Nets opted for two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, who wasn’t even thought of as a candidate for the position. Vaughn will stay on the Brooklyn staff though, and he’ll also be the best-paid assistant coach in the league per Wojnarowski. While it’s too bad he wasn’t selected to lead the Nets, Vaughn is still in a good position, both financially and in terms of future options.

Despite getting swept by the defending champion Toronto Raptors, the Nets will be a force in the East once their roster is healthy, giving Vaughn a very real chance at a ring. He’ll also be able to coach guys like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and Caris LeVert.

Even if he doesn’t stick around in Brooklyn longterm, Vaughn could be considered for future head coaching positions as they open up. His head coaching record in Orlando may not have been great, but with a lot more experience under his belt, there will probably be a team out there willing to give him a chance sometime in the future.

As a member of Kansas basketball, Vaughn was always one of the smartest players, if not the smartest player on the floor. His intelligence served him well in college and in the pros, and it will continue to benefit him as he goes through his coaching career.
