Despite a new Big 12 schedule, Kansas football has yet to announce who the Jayhawks’ non-conference opponent will be this season.

For now, it looks like we’ll have a Kansas football season in 2020. The Big 12 announced an adjusted conference slate yesterday while also reaffirming the “9+1” format that they’d implemented earlier. The “1” game must be played within the Big 12 school’s home stadium, and it must precede any conference games.

The Jayhawks were originally supposed to host Southern Illinois for their lone non-conference game; however, that will not be the case. The game is set for September 12, and rumors of who Kansas will be facing have been flying.

Kansas athletic director Jeff Long has a verbal agreement with whoever the opponent it but nothing is in writing yet, hence the delay of a release.

The most prevalent thought is that the Jayhawks will be taking on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, which has been reported by The Southern Illinoisan. Playing Coastal Carolina does make sense for Kansas. The Jayhawks and Chanticleers were schedule to meet this year in South Carolina, but the game was cancelled.

If the report is true and Kansas football will be taking on Coastal Carolina, then it should be a big game for the Jayhawks. Kansas will be looking for revenge after an embarrassing 12-7 home loss to the Chanticleers last season. It was an extremely depressing game, and Coastal Carolina rubbed salt in the wound after exiting the field.

The team entered the visitor’s locker room where a piñata shaped like a Jayhawk was hit repeatedly. At the very least, this incident should provide some really good bulletin board material for Kansas.

Whether Kansas plays Coastal Carolina or not, the Jayhawks have a season to prepare for. Even though it’s a abbreviated, it’s better than nothing and hopefully we’ll see some improvement from Les Miles’ squad.
