Offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon’s offense should be a lot of fun to watch next season, and it’s been awhile since Kansas football fans have gotten to watch a competent offense.

Kansas football will likely improve in 2020, and a lot of that improvement will be thanks to offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon, who took over the offense halfway though last season. Now with a full off season to prepare, the Jayhawk offense led by Dearmon will probably be respectable for once.

Dearmon certainly has plenty of weapons to work with. Kansas is returning first-team All-Big 12 running back Pooka Williams who has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons. Williams is also capable of catching the ball, which could be utilized by Dearmon.

Receivers Andrew Parchment and Stephon Robinson will both be back too next season, and both could be some of the best receivers in the Big 12. Both were named to Athlon preseason teams, which bodes well for the pair.

One area where the Jayhawks are weak is at the quarterback position. As of now, there doesn’t seem to be a front runner to land the starting job, and we may not know for sure who the starter is until the first game.

Last season, Kansas football averaged 24.5 points per game before Dearmon took over. After, the Jayhawks only averaged 24.2 points per game, which is actually impressive for a couple of reasons.

For starters, Dearmon was the coordinator for the second half of the season, which didn’t include any FCS or low-level FBS teams. Dearmon also only had one bye-week to prepare for the second half of the season, so the fact that the team didn’t really regress is actually pretty good.

Now that he’s had quite awhile to prepare, it’ll be interesting to see what Dearmon’s able to do with the offense. Granted, the players haven’t been on campus, but even the limited amount of time he gets with the players will be more than he got last season when he was promoted.
