It has been forever since Kansas football had a clear starter all through Spring and into the Fall; next season will be no different for the Jayhawks.

Kansas football is returning some key pieces from their 2019 team, including Andrew Parchment, Stephon Robinson, and Pooka Williams. The one position on offense that the Jayhawks have no answer for yet is at quarterback. There’s nothing new there, but the added challenges of the coronavirus haven’t helped.

The most prominent names vying for the quarterback position are senior Thomas MacVittie, juniors Miles Kendrick and Miles Fallin, as well as true freshman Jalon Daniels. Due to the fact that the Spring Game was cancelled and coaches haven’t even seen the players yet, there’s really no way to know who the front runners are.

Per Big 12 rules, players won’t be allowed back on campus until June 15; however, head coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brent Dearmon have been working with the QBs virtually according to the Lawrence Journal-World. That’s good news, since it’ll allow the coaches and players to hit the ground running when they come back to Lawrence.

Last season, MacVittie and Carter Stanley battled for the starting position throughout the offseason before Stanley was given the nod. Based on the fact that MacVittie was in contention for the role last season and the fact that he’s a senior, it would follow that he’s got at least a little bit of a head start over the competition.

Then on the other end of the spectrum, there’s incoming freshman Jalon Daniels, who Brent Dearmon loves. The dual threat QB would be a great fit for Dearmon’s RPO scheme, so he could see a little bit of time as a freshman even though winning the starting job would be tough.

Finding a reliable quarterback is crucial for the team’s success next season. Without a QB, the value of returning so many skill players diminishes greatly, and so do the Jayhawks’ chances of winning a few games.
