Kansas football: Steven Sims Jr. can build on solid rookie season
Kansas football alum Steven Sims Jr. had a good rookie season last year with the Washington Redskins and he’ll look to build off of that in year two.
After spending four years with Kansas football, Steven Sims went undrafted and then signed with the Washington Redskins. Sims survived all the roster cuts, and Sims became both a valuable return man and receiver for Washington.
Before that though, Sims was a huge part of the Kansas Jayhawks offense. He ranks second in career receiving yards and touchdowns at Kansas, and he also made some All-Big 12 teams too.
Last season with the Redskins, Sims totaled 34 receptions and four touchdowns on the year, which isn’t too shabby for a former undrafted free agent. Sims should be able to build on his rookie season, and hopefully become a longtime NFL player.
With head head coach Ron Rivera and quarterback Dwayne Haskins, it’ll be interesting to see how they utilize Sims. The former Kansas football star could have a breakout season in 2020, especially if he gets a lot of targets at the receiver position.
Sims has also done a good job making a name for himself on special teams as a return man. Even if for some reason he wasn’t targeted as a receiver, he could still get the ball in his hands from returning kicks and punts for the Redskins.
From an under-recruited three-star prospect, to Kansas football star, to undrafted free agent, to NFL receiver, Steven Sims’ journey to the NFL has been an inspiring one to say the least. He’s been so much fun to watch in both college and in the NFL, and that trend is almost sure to continue.
Definitely be on the lookout for Sims next season. He will likely have a larger role with the Redskins next season, which should lead to a higher number or receptions and touchdowns.
