Kansas football star Pooka Williams is set for a huge season in 2020, and it could be his last as a Jayhawk.

Pooka Williams is easily one of the best players Kansas football has had in a decade. His speed and ability to slip out of what appear to be sure tackles make him one of the top running backs in the Big 12, and he should be set for a big season in 2020.

Williams is coming off of a pair of 1,000-yard seasons in both his freshman and sophomore years, and he was also named to the All-Big 12 First-Team in both seasons. If he can manage at least 1,000 yards next season, he could move into fourth place in all-time rushing yards at Kansas and pass a number of all-time greats including Gale Sayers.

Given how versatile Williams is, he could also help contribute in the Jayhawks’ passing game. He’s collected over 500 receiving yards and four touchdowns, so offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon could cook up some new schemes to get Williams the ball in creative ways.

Another factor that could possibly benefit Williams is the Jayhawks’ lack of a quarterback (as of now). Hopefully, Dearmon and Les Miles will trust their quarterback and run a balanced offense, but you never know.

Obviously, being one-dimensional would ultimately hurt Williams; however, Williams could get more carries if the offense is run-oriented.

While Williams is ultimately one of the best backs in the Big 12 Conference, he probably won’t be best considering the dominance of Chuba Hubbard who rushed for over 2,000 yards last season at Oklahoma State. Whlie Hubbard is basically a lock to be named first-team All-Big 12, Williams should have a chance to make the other first-team slot or a second-team slot.

Sadly, there is a chance that this will be Williams’ last season at Kansas. He was included on CBS‘ top 100 NFL Draft prospects for the 2020 season, so there’s a real chance that he declares after this season.

Should Williams decide to return for his senior year, he’d almost certainly become the all-time leading rusher at Kansas barring some unforeseen circumstances. Whatever Williams decides to do after this season, there’s no denying that he’ll be remembered as one of the best running backs in Kansas football history.
