Kansas football head coach Les Miles deserves to be ranked higher among coaches of Power Five programs based on his past and what he’s done at Kansas.

CBS Sports ranked every Power Five coach (plus Notre Dame) in the nation, and Kansas football’s very own Les Miles clocked in at No. 43 overall and No. 7 in the Big 12 conference. One of only a few current coaches that have won a national title, Miles deserves to be higher on the list.

Sure, the title was all the way back in 2007; however, Miles did have success at LSU after his title run, and his first season at Kansas wasn’t as bad as the record may have indicated. The Jayhawks only won three games in 2019, but that’s quite the accomplishment based on history.

Despite going only 3-9, Miles is the only one coach to have not regressed in his first season at Kansas in the last 20 seasons. Even Mark Mangino went 2-8 in his first season after taking over for Terry Allen and interim Tom Hayes who managed to scrape three wins together.

Miles also had the Jayhawks in contention to win some big games last season, most notably at No. 15 Texas where Kansas suffered a heartbreaking 50-48 loss. Coming that close to beating any Big 12 opponent, let alone a ranked one on the road was something that didn’t seem possible before Miles.

Another area where Miles has really improved Kansas is recruiting. The Jayhawks’ 2021 class currently ranks No. 36 overall and No. 6 in the Big 12 according to 247 Sports, and if those numbers hold, Kansas could be looking at one of their best classes in years.

So while Miles probably doesn’t deserve to be in the top 20, he’s certainly better than No. 43 overall. He’s easily one of the most recognizable faces in college athletics, and Miles is on track to get the Kansas football program turned around.
