Kansas basketball: All-time Roy Williams Jayhawks team
Center: Raef LaFrentz (1994–1998)
If there was one word to describe Raef LaFrentz‘s time in Lawrence, it’d be dominant. He was an absolute force for Roy Williams’ mid to late ’90s Kansas Jayhawks teams, and he’s also one of the most decorated players in KU basketball history:
- 4-time conference champion
- 1997 Consensus first-team All-American
- 1998 Consensus first-team All-American
- 1997 Big 12 Player of the Year
- 1998 Big 12 Player of the Year
- 3-time first-team all-conference
- No. 3 in all-time scoring at Kansas
- Jersey retired
One of the most annoying things about LaFrentz’s legacy at Kansas is that it isn’t talked about enough. Outside of Wilt and Danny, he’s in contention for one of the best big men in ever at Kansas yet many younger fans have never even heard of him or know just how good he was.
In LaFrentz’s senior season, he averaged 19.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game and led the Jayhawks to their fourth-straight Big 12 title. Despite having high hopes, Kansas would go on to be upset by eight-seed Rhode Island in the NCAA Tournament, effectively ending LaFrentz’s collegiate career.
He’d go on to be drafted with the No. 3 overall pick by the Denver Nuggets and play 11 seasons in the NBA.
